His Holiness Patriarch Abune Matias’ statement is personal, not the decision of the Holy Synod

His Holiness Abune Matias’ recent statement on the current situation in Tigray State is a personal statement and not a decision of the Holy Synod, according to the Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

The Secretary-General of the Holy Synod of the Church and the Archbishop of Sidama and the Diocese of Gedeo, His Holiness Abune Yosef, said in a statement. His Holiness Abune Matias I, Archbishop of Ethiopia, Archbishop Zeaxum Wechege Zemenbere Teklehaimanot has recently released information on the current situation in Tigray State. The information represents their personal opinion, not the decision of the Permanent Synod.

He said the Holy Patriarch could not make a statement on behalf of the Church and the Holy Synod without a permanent synod.

Abune Yosef, who said that the Holy Synod’s declaration process has been in the past, said that the Holy Synod meets twice a year to discuss and formulate and approve current issues. He said the Holy Synod will decide to state the discussion.

Many statements concerning the Church are given and given with the approval of the Plenary and Permanent Synod. He said the plenum will convene only twice a year.
