World’s First Face and Hand Transplant Surgery Hailed a Success’ A 22-year-old man has undergone the world’s first face and double hand transplant. The New Jersey resident was severely burned in a horrific car crash. The reconstructive plastic surgery, carried out by a team at New York University’s Langone Health, took 23 hours.
It Included transplanting both hands and the full face of a single organ donor. The operation marked the first ever successful combination transplant of its kind. The patient was Joe DiMeo, who suffered burns over 80 percent of his body in 2018.
